Regenerative medicine is an evolving practice on the forefront of treating injuries and disease. One form of regenerative medicine that’s used to treat a number of different issues is called platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP therapy). At Beeson Wellness Center, we’re proud to provide patients with cutting-edge and effective PRP therapy.
What is platelet-rich-plasma therapy?
PRP therapy is an innovative kind of regenerative medicine that utilizes your body’s ability to heal itself. This is made possible by harnessing the various capabilities of your blood’s components, specifically the platelets found within your blood. Your platelets have the ability to regenerate, and they contain certain types of growth and healing factors. PRP therapy takes advantage of this and uses it to heal injuries and disease found within your body.
How is PRP therapy performed?
The procedure starts with one of our providers drawing your blood, typically from your arm, and then processing it through a specialized tool called a centrifuge, which separates your platelet-rich plasma from the rest of your blood and makes it accessible for the treatment.
Next, we’ll use a needle to inject the platelet-rich plasma into the area that we’re treating. Sometimes it’s necessary for us to use ultrasound guidance to ensure that we’re accurately injecting the platelet-rich plasma into the optimal location for healing.
PRP therapy is a safe and effective procedure that can be completed in a single visit. You can typically expect the procedure to last no longer than 30 minutes, but it can take longer depending on the area of your body we’re treating and if we’re treating more than one area.
What injuries is PRP therapy used for?
PRP therapy is effective in a number of different applications, some of which include:
- Tendon injuries, such as tennis elbow or tendonitis
- Muscle and ligament injuries sustained from physical activity, such as hamstring injuries and knee pain
- Bone fracture recovery
- Arthritis, most commonly treated in the knee
- Recovery treatment from certain types of surgery
- Inflammation reduction
- Hair loss treatment to promote hair growth
PRP therapy strives to provide relief by reducing pain, restoring function, and slowing or repairing damage caused by injury or disease.
