Chiropractic care is an alternative medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions and creating general health optimization by adjusting the spine's alignment. Our adjustments help to relieve chronic pain, reduce inflammation, and improve overall physical and mental well-being.
I am often asked, how I got into Chiropractic.
It all started with an injury and my search for a solution. I loved basketball while growing up and did well at it in high school. That led me to Lindfield University, where I played basketball all four years. During a game, I received an injury to my neck. The pain was terrible and wasn't going away. The recommended medical treatments gave no relief for my headaches or neck pain. Finally, I went to a chiropractor. He examined me and made a specific manipulation to my neck. It was something entirely new for me at that time. My headache started to dissipate right away while I was still in the office. I felt a release! That day, I decided to be a chiropractor.
Right after college, I played in the NBA with the Seattle Supersonics. After the NBA, I went to the chiropractic college and graduated as a chiropractic physician. Following my internship, I started a practice in Portland, Oregon.
After many years of practice, I have realized that most people don't understand how chiropractic works or how many physical pains and problems can be resolved.
Chiropractic treatments can help with various issues ranging from back and neck pain to migraines, headaches, and disc or joint injuries. The goal is to improve the body's function by addressing chronic stress, imbalanced posture, and structural misalignment. With regular chiropractic treatment, you may experience less tension in the body and more mobility in your joints. Chiropractic treatments can significantly reduce pain and inflammation while increasing your range of motion. Now, what does that mean?
Most of us know someone who has fractured a bone. A doctor puts a cast on it to protect the body part while it heals itself. It is not the cast that heals the bone. It is the bone that heals itself. The body has an innate ability to heal itself if nothing interferes with the healing process.
At Beeson Wellness, our definition of health is, "You are healthy when every cell, tissue, and organ in the body does its job when it is supposed to. And we want you to know how to utilize chiropractic in your future healthcare choices.
Chiropractors recognized that joints have a particular function called joint play. It is the normal elasticity of the joints in a healthy joint. Joints should slide and glide when you move; when they do, there is an exchange of fluid and nutrition in the joints. This exchange keeps the joints healthy and elastic.
For optimum health, the joints must function correctly. So, when the optimum motion is lost, we at Beeson Wellness use a corrective program and put fixated joints back into motion. With the function restored, the joints begin to improve and heal. If the joint is arthritic, chiropractic adjustments will slow the arthritic progression, and function will return. In the picture above, you can see a healthy and degenerative disc. Loss of joint play leads to a degenerative process and decreased range of motion. One might ask, "Can one receive a joint manipulation even if the disc is in a degenerative state?" The answer is "yes." The tissues are alive and somewhat supple, and with the correct forces, we can get the vertebra moving again. Restoring motion can arrest the degenerative process. Often, patients ask if a degenerative disc could become completely normal again. Unfortunately, the answer is “no”, but we can get the disc moving again, and the joints will become better in function.
We are a multi-disciplined clinic. I am very fortunate that my daughter became a chiropractic physician several years ago. She is running our rehabilitation program. On the medical side, we have a nurse practitioner helping with diagnosis and regenerative medicine. We are an integrative clinic which means many of our patients will share all three providers with their care. With this collaborative effort, we get great results! Our team loves helping people without drugs or surgery and getting one back to living the life they want.
