What is peripheral neuropathy?

Neuropathy refers to pain caused by damage, irritation, or inflammation of nerve tissue. Peripheral neuropathy affects the peripheral nervous system, the network of nerves that emerges from your spinal cord and travels to the rest of your body. Your brain uses your peripheral nervous system to send and receive messages.

How is neuropathy diagnosed?

If you have symptoms of neuropathy, your provider at Beeson Wellness Center will perform a comprehensive health evaluation. The evaluation will begin with a physical exam, which will include an assessment of your reflexes and sensory response.
Advanced diagnostic imaging will also be performed, such as digital X-rays, surface electromyography, or an ultrasound. These will be used to determine the cause of your symptoms and the extent of any damage to your spinal discs, vertebrae, bones, connective tissue, or any other tissue. Your provider may also order blood work and a urine test to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

After your evaluation is complete, your provider will create a custom treatment plan, which will integrate the skills of the entire team at Beeson Wellness Center. By applying multiple therapies, your treatment plan can help manage your nerve pain and help restore your function and range of motion.
